Fabrics - Stofjes

I received the most beautiful Japanese fabrics form Ayumi. I plan on using them for the "Green Tea and Sweet Beans" quilt, for which I bought Jen Kingwell's pattern some months ago. An Australian pattern, Japanese fabrics and the quilt will be made in Belgium. Three continents in one quilt and I didn't even have to leave home. Internet really has changed our world (I know, I'm from a generation that can still be amazed by that).

From top to bottom and left to right:

6) Retro flowers on polka dots in red
7) Junko Matsuda for D's Selection colourful dots

And some extra's Ayumi send me!

Blogger's Quilt Festival Fall 2012

It's the time of the year again when Amy hosts the Bloggers Quilt festival! If you came here through her site, welcome! I'm Anne, I've been quilting for a couple of years now, I buy way too much fabric, have way too many unfinished quilts but luckily, once in a while I actually manage to finish one!

I hesitated between two quilts, but finally decided to enter my Winnie-the Pooh quilt because of the story behind it and the hand quilting.

It all started with a colleague of mine who brought me an old pj of her daughter. A Winnie-the-Pooh pj that had been her daughters favorite for years and years. That same daughter had now graduated, had started working and had just bought a house. We decided to use the pj's as the starting point for a quilt that my colleague would give to her daughter when she would move into her new house, which gave me about six months to finish it. And so I started.

First I fussy cut all the different Winnie-the-Pooh drawings. They were in a soft greyish-green colour that coordinated really well, in my opinion, with blues, greens and purples from my stash. I used lots of solids because I didn't want to drown poor Winnie in busy prints.

There were 8 different scenes in all: Winnie up in a tree, Winnie trying to get in a tree, Winnie looking at something, all of them really cute. So I made 8 blocks, all roughly the same size and bound them in Kona snow. This was the finished quilt top:
But I wanted to do something more, somethin extra. After all, this was a special quilt. So I decided to hand quilt it with perle cotton. I love hand quilting with perle cotton. If you haven't tried it yet, you should! I adds a modern and at the same time a very soft touch to the quilt. I used several hues of green, blue and purple to make it interesting and decided on big circles as the quilting pattern.

For the back, I chose the same colours, while the binding is one of the solid blues I used in the log cabin blocks.

Now for the stats:
Finished quilt measures : 140cm x 170 cm (55″x 67″)
Special techniques used : fussy cutting
Quilted by : me
Best Category : Hand-quilted quilt, Throw quilt , Scrap quilt (too bad there isn't a pyjama quilt category...)

Thanks for visiting and have a lovely day!

Progress on Winding Ways - Vooruitgang met Winding Ways

Five more blocks for the Winding Ways quilt! Progress is slow because, to be honest, they are a bit boring to make...

Some weeks ago, I decided to follow a Lone star patchwork course, organised by 't Wolwinkeltje, a local fabric shop. The first lessson was last week and I already had chosen my fabric at home: Field Study by the very talented Anna Maria Horner.

As always her fabrics make for many possible combinations and it's fun to see how even the large scale fabrics work well in these rather small diamond patches. The points of the star came together surprisingly fast and before I quite realised it, I had finished one point.

And then a second.

En dan een tweede.

And then number three and four.

En dan nummer drie en vier.

Half a lone star in just a few evenings, I must say I was pleased with this result! The next lesson is in a month or so, and I will have to decide on my background fabric. Solid? Dots? A Field Study fabric? Decisions, decisions, so difficult to make decisions.

Effen? Bolletjes? Een stof van de Field Study reeks? Twijfel, twijfel.

Quilt bee (october)

Amy was our queen bee for october. She asked for wonky log cabins, for which a certain amount of improv is necessary, not something I'm very good at. Nevertheless, I decided to completely go for it and had only "wonky" on my mind! The result may show that the "log cabin" part didn't get the same amount of attention...

We received nice green, purple, taupe and neutral fabrics to make the blocks. I usually struggle a lot with purple fabrics and often leave them out at the last minute. But Amy's selection had some gorgeous warm purples and the taupe fabrics made me want to run to the fabric shop and get some!

This are the not-completely-finished blocks. I didn't get enough fabrics to make two finished blocks and Amy prefers to finish and square them herself. But it still feels a bit weird to send unfinished blocks...

winding ways quilt

These past few days I've been working on my winding ways quilt. I use a "Ruby Red" fat quarter pack from Oakshott. I managed to make enough blocks for one full circle of the pattern, and that gives a pretty good idea how the end result will look.

As I find it impossible to make good colour combinations without daylight, this project turns out to be ideal for long and dark winter evenings.  I just have to use every colour from the fat quarter pack, easy peasy.

As always, making a block takes a lot of time. Cutting included about an hour for every single block. Sometimes I think it would go faster if I sewed everything by hand. My plan is to have it finished by the end of winter, so you'll probably see it pop up from time to time on my blog.

Quilt bee

Finally I managed to finish the bee blocks for Ann from Denmark. She asked for two "converging corners" blocks from Ashley at "Film in the Fridge". You can find Ashely's tutorial for this block here, on her website.

As always it took me a lot longer than I expected. I just can't hurry when I make a quilt block and take at least 10 minutes to think about every next step. Improv isn't easy for me, I think too much about everything. And that means making just 2 blocks takes me all day...

Chicopee

Denyse Schmidt did it again: she made yet another beautiful collection with Chicopee. It was impossible for me to resist, so here they are. The colours are modern and vintage at the same time and thats' what I love about them. I already know exactly what I'll make with them. But first I have to finish some bee blocks! I'm still working on Ann's blocks from september and now Amy's fabric for october already arrived..
